Yes on my first computer. It was an AST 125 MegaHertz with a whopping 4 Megs of RAM and 120 Meg HD. Windows 3.1 and DOS 6. I was removing Doublespace and ended up with a 10 pound paperweight. I lost all my WordPerfect documents and whatever else you could store on 120 megs.

I actually did during my time in China, since my laptop crashed and I had to have it repaired. Although it only cost me the equivalent of AU$4, now my Windows is in Chinese!

While I don't know too much about the technical aspect, I believe my hard drive overheated at one point. It left me temporarily without access to the computer and led to me having to buy a new computer. However, I retrieved MOST of the files on the hard drive after buying a conversion adapter to connect the HD to USB and transfer the files.

Sadly, the files that I did lose were pretty expensive. That would be Microsoft software, purchased from Staples, that added up to over a thousand dollars. Not pretty, especially losing Microsoft Word for such a long time - it left a few current projects in a struggling mess.

Ahh, the painful memories. Now I recall how miserable it was attempting to convert the .docx files into .txt or .rtf so I could send them to my clients at the time. Okay, going to back out of this thread now...happy thoughts.

This computer is nearly trashed too, glad I'm using the old hard drive as back up now!

Around 3 yrs ago I lost around 40 GB of data: documents, photos, music and so on! I had only one disc on my laptop, and once I decide to make a few partitions on it, at that time i was not aware of loosing all data and have not backed it up! By some reasons, the process of partition went wrong and all data lost. Since that day i back up everything that may have value for me!

1 year back, I had to format my HDD completely after a serious virus attack. I lost around 120 GB of important data that time.
