Has the recession hurt your affiliate business?

Just wondering, I know the retailers have been taking a severe beating. I was wondering if the affiliates have seen a similar downturn in business from this time last year. Mine is down a bit, but I think I'm doing ok compared to the mainstream financial chaos

Well mine has had a recent jump lately. It depends what kind of products you are promoting though. In a recession people tend to buy less of what they can live without but will spend more money on things 2 things: Things they NEED and things they think will make them money. So money making products can do pretty well during a recession, as long as they are presented in the right way.

I've only just started but I've had some decent success so far by taking advantage of the poor economy. People are broke. Give them stuff for free, or help them to better their financial situation.

Some products are down, some are up. It pays to be diversified :) I haven't had nearly as much in hosting sales, but people need money for college and other free resources.

I started with affiliate marketing in May 2008 and November has been the best month for me so far...More to come in the new year I hope. With more hard and smart work you can beat the recession.

Same here, can't see any difference, traffic increased but conversions almost the same. Gadgets are picking up, but probably it's because holidays are close...

For me it has been a pretty lackluster Christmas season. I expected things to worsen a bit, and so far they have.

Guess I won't be quitting my day job any time soon ...

Just starting up in affiliate marketing at the moment, not put a huge amount of effort in but as things slow down in my own business coming up to christmas (and with jan and feb traditionally dead anyway) aff marketing is something I am looking at really getting into.

Do people think this is a good time to get into, or has the crunch meant things are too difficult at the moment?

Looking at starting out in organics search as i want to make sure I get teh basics before heading over to PPC

I would say that this is a good time to get ito the business, so long as your not depending on it. Affiliate marketing is a great way to make extra cash to get you by each month. However, it is very difficult to make a life out of (not impossible, just hard)

Yea, stay with the organics till you get your sea legs. Honestly, organics are the best anyways, imo

    Thanks for the advice.

No, not dependant on it. I work as a solo recruiter (hence the name) in a specific niche that is always dead over the end of dec/jan/feb period so have saved for it and frankly it gives me some spare time over this period. Usually I just use it to relax a bit but picked up a rugby injury that means I can't burn my energy off that way so have a lot of spare time and energy to invest in something!

good to know organics are the way forward, until now just been running a couple of blogs (1 on my business niche and one on rugby) and have slowly picked up the SEO tips thanks to learning about those (nearly there i think, rugby one on page 2 for targetted keyword, hopefully front page soon). Should be able to take this knowledge into affiliate marketing and adsense sniping i think.

good to know the crunch isn't making things too difficult for people.

Advertising is going to be at an inflection point here soon. The newspapers and traditional media will get flushed out, and advertisers will want to start seeing measurable results. You can do all that on the web.
