Has Hostgator been acquired by EIG

    It's absolutely true. This is old news. The sale happened weeks ago.

    As far as being worried, I certainly would be. EIG is known for running terrible webhosts (and taking good ones and running them into the ground). Not really sure what they are planning with HG, but if their other sites are any indication, it can't be good.

    Yes this is true, Brent himself has confirmed it on several occasions! I would be worried also, i'm not saying to cancel your hosting but I would make sure to take backups so you have them if you do have to move in the future!

    EIG has now acquired close to 40 hosting companies and yes Host Gator is its newest. The deal has closed and while you want to start looking into other providers consider taking backup with regularity if you are on their servers. You never know what may happen to a company once the new executives and leaders enter the arena. It may go smooth or it may go poorly but either way daily backups will ensure that you come away with your data intact over lost somewhere or simply beyond recovery.
