Has Christmas killed your organic traffic?

Have you seen a dip in yr organic traffic because of christmas maybe?

I was getting 300 - 400 search engine hits a day normally but this past week it's gone down to about a hundred. Checked just then on one of my sites and it's only had about 50. Normally it's about 200 by now. Is this the same for you as well? Have you found this before around Christmas time? Obviously I guess it depends on the niche you are in. As for me I saw a dramatic rise in people searching for to sell their mobile phone but now it's just dropped off. I expect it's because not many people are searching for this now but I expect it to go through the roof again once christmas is passed.

    Hi,

The traffic will be very high for shopping related sites in Christmas season, but for other business the traffic is less.

    Regards,
    Srinivas.

For the sites that I am working with, traffic is off by ~15% . These are BtoB sites for the most part. As we get closer to Christmas I expect traffic to drop an additional 10-15%.

Really depends on niche, if you have a shopping type site then this is the best time of the year, but if you have a fitness / health website it generally drops quite a bit around this time of year.

That is a surprise because for my nightclub site Google traffic has doubled within the last 1-2 weeks compared with the previous weeks. im one of the lucky ones :)

Is it just a drop in usual searches, or have your rankings for key words changed. If its the former, it'll probably pick up again in the new year, but if your ranking has changed, you might need to dig in and do a little more seo work to get back on top!

Right, anything related to gifts and consumer products gets a huge boost, the rest is seeing a drop...but summer holidays are alot worse!

Really does depend on the niche, but I guess a majority of us will feel some sort of slump in traffic unless we're providing consumer goods.

It's really a good period to just re-evaluate everything.

Some of the search terms have alot of shopping listings that make the pages longer for first page. They have mutiple pages listed or images shown and it moves lower sites even father down the pages than normal.

No doubt because people do search different keywords this kind of season.. Don't expect them to think of anything other than buying gifts for their loved ones :)

So it's quite normal to have less traffic on december..

xmas is always a slow time for ecommerce, and then it jumps back up in the 2nd week of January usually.

You should be checking whether your rankings have dropped at all though, just in case ;)

If I experience a drop in traffic I review my analytic reports. What sources of traffic caused the dip in traffic? If search engines - what keywords? If big changes in referrals from select keywords - you'll want to check your rankings. All of your answers should be in your analytics.

I saw a nice spike in traffic (and $$$) the last couple weeks but they are slowing dying down :(

I did notice that one of my sites jumped 4 spots in search engine placement to #1. Its been back and forth with another similar site all week.

Yeah, I posted about this in the sub-forum "the underground". :D

When does traffic start to get back to normal?

I reckon diversity in topic and website themes pays. Some websites are down others up, meanwhile Christmas related articles are doing good business again. Last year (without the diversification we've implemented this year) traffic died. Your niche should be good in the new year though - hope you do well

I've suffered a big dip, but that is due to something else that I am working on now.
