I am in the process of redesigning a website for a client. He wanted to see some of the changes, so I uploaded a page for him to see. But he couldn't view the changes, even after he refreshed his browser. I even had a few people, in different locations and with various isp providers, preview the site to see what the saw - everyone viewed the site as I did - with the changes. I then had my client capture a screen image and e-mail to me, as I also did for him, and to my frustrations - his screen image is of the old page. The only thing I thought of was his previous isp connection, which was dial up with some type of compression accelerator that cached the pages for faster viewing. Is it possible that this could be causing the problem, even though he now has dsl? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance for your replies.
Yes. This must be the case. Some ISPs do use cache to save bandwidth. I face the same problem many times . I get the problem with my Cable Net. I sometimes have to wait for a few hours before the cache gets cleared and I see the fresh pages. Luckily I got a dialup connection too, which always gives me the fresh version.
Thanks for responding flawebworks! I never experienced this before, do you have any solutions? His current isp is verizon dsl and his previous isp was Juno dial up.
Thanks sachin 410. But he is using dsl now and not even using the dial up connection that was using the caching. Could it be still active when he launches internet explorer?
Did he clear the browser cache properly? Maybe this is helpful - http://help.excite.com/tech/old_page.html
He said he tried everything, but I am not sure what he really did try and what he really knows. I will forward the link to him to be sure. Thanks again sachin410!
easiest way to work around this: * rename the page (new_homepage.html or something like that) * if you changed any images, rename them to proxies / caches are forced to load them.
(1)What Frankm suggested is 100% correct. Let HP11 client watch the same page with different name. (2) Another version of browser also will show same if cache was not cleared. (3) and my suggestion is HP11 client must cross check with his friends who is having different internet provider.
Thanks for the replies everyone! I just wanted to give an update. After he deleted his cookies and files, he was able to see all of the updates. Thanks again!!
CTRL-F5 forces a refresh and overrides cache. It's the first thing to try if you're seeing old content. You don't need to go renaming pages etc. NOCACHE in the header is also a good suggestion, but I think images may still get drawn from cache...I could be wrong on that though.
