Hard disk failure. Is it possible to save the data?

    Hello DP users,

I have a 120 GB Seagate Barracuda hard drive making that infamous clicking sound :( (granted, it worked for 3 years)

I've heard that if I find the same hard drive model and swap some parts(I dont know which ones) then theres a chance to save the data, because the clicking sound is the actual mechanism that is broke and not the data?

Is this true? Anyone done it before? And is it possible to do in home conditions?

    thanks

Contact Seagate and ask them if it is a possibility.

really? So you couldnt boot it on your Pc, but it booted on another Pc? Was it clicking too? It does come up in bios, but when it tries to read it on boot screen, it starts the clicking again.

the question is if its 3 or 5 years...)

Seagate has a 10 year warranty on all IDE and SATA hard drives

The files are recoverable as long as the drive is not formatted

thats what I meant, not to boot it, but that PC saw it. In my case if I connect it, I cant get to the Windows from the new hdd, it gets stuck in bios.

The problem is that the faulty HDD also had OS on it, so Im not sure if tries to load it? with sata hdd's they choose automaticaly the master and the slave...

the data recovery shops will charge you based on every single MB....dats expensive.

If you are familiar in repairing a HD you can fix it your self just like my friend doing in some of the broken HD in our Cafe, But if your not familiar in repairing A HD maybe I prefer you to go to a service center of seagate.

I just checked by the serial number and its:

    In Warranty
    Expiration 16-Nov-2009

    However:

If I could back it up, I would not seek a warranty....uh

Contact the local data recovery experts and they can do the job in a day or two.

If its still working and just making the clicking sound like its about to go down, just get yourself an external hard drive and save all your data before it does go down.
