I am currently 18 years old and going into college soon. I plan to major in marketing but the more I think about it the more I'm leaning away from it. It seems that there is minimal self gratification or happiness in the field. That being said I've had no experience in it so what do I know. Can anybody give me some insight about this? I'm extremely conflicted and don't have very much time.
Forget what you want to do -- what impact do you want to have on the world? You have to follow your passions and consider how meaningful your work will be to you. Personally, I enjoy marketing because I have the chance to do something legitimate in a field where many are taking sleezy approaches. I try to write helpful content on my blogs that has a positive impact on the lives of those who read them. If I can help someone better themselves, then I feel good at the end of the day. Marketing is a way for me to spread that content and share it with the world (and, of course, to figure out how to make a living off it at the same time). Happiness is all in how you approach something. If you can use your degree to do work that is meaningful to you, then you should take that approach. If not, major in something else. You should absolutely go to college, even if you do something else later in life. The knowledge, experiences, and educational foundation you'll receive are invaluable. With that said, many people change careers several times in their lives. Choosing what to do with the rest of your life at 18 is a lot to ask of someone. It's important to put thought into it, but at the end of the day you have to follow your gut and not worry too much about it. If you don't like marketing (or whatever you decide on), you can switch majors. Even after getting a degree, you can still work in other fields. Follow your heart and have fun in college. It will be the best years of your life!
Making a career from marketing will involve a lot of hard work. There is a lot of competition out there these days for jobs, so you're going to have to stand out from the crowd. If you get hired learn from your coworkers or partners that have experience. Update your skills regularly to stay current and informed as the marketplace evolves daily. Try to find work in a popular and lucrative niche. And always remember to stay in line within the goals and mission statement of the company that you're going to work for.
Look at your long-term goals and your personality How important is financial security? do you like working with others? do you handle stress? do you want to be able to work in any size town or city? do you want to be able to work in any country? Do you want to be able to have breaks in your employment while you do things like look after children? Marketing requires lots of creativity but not everybody gets to do marketing for fancy companies - a lot of people are writing marketing plans and implementing them for local car yards, shopping centres and other less than exciting projects. Their clients will still expect your enthusiasm! Accounting is a really safe career path, lots of jobs there always will be lots of jobs you can work wherever you want to work and there Is a lot of flexibility depending on your career aspirations. What exactly do you mean by “self-gratification”?
Hi, don’t worry! As for me, it is a good and very needed idea for you! I think it is a job for a future! Why not? After the education you will be a big expert in such questions and you will have a lot of advantages! That is why, I think it is a good solution for you! Also, it will be very knowledge! Keep calm and do it)))
Let me be brutally honest, marketing is like film-making and I would suggest that you watch this video made by Casey Neistat. If you don't want to watch the full video, just start from 3:35, which is the point he talks about. He is right, so many marketers sucks, because they have their set of rules they play by and it is hard for the to get out of the box. If you really appreciate the art of marketing, I'd suggest you get into something that is related to marketing. If you want to do more the creative things like ads and so on, study design. If you want to be more the behind the scene guys, study psychology. Marketing is applied psychology, if you understand human behaviour, you will rock in marketing. Studying marketing will make you another grey spot in this industry and you might start hating it. This is my opinion. If you want to study something, study something that has strong ties to marketing. What you can also do is start a blog, vlog or anything else and start to market the shit out of it and try to get your skills there. I know agencies that don't care what you have on your CV, if you have a good blog and you generate good traffic to it, they will hire you without questions. Because if you can do it for yourself, you can do it for a client. And by the end of the day, you save money on education and you may make money from ads. But again, this is my opinion. Don't through education light-hearted away, if you feel you need to study, just do it.
