I just wanted to know why does the Google.com domain and the adsense pages have descriptions in the google search engine that are not present in a meta tag or even on page?

Do a search for Google and then do a search for adsense then look at the descriptions in the search results, where are these descriptions being pulled from, and is it hand edited?
