It will be interesting. Although dissapointing that the Palestinian people would make this choice, it will be a window of opputunity as well. Remeber, it is easier to garner radical support when you are not in power, you have the propaganda of blame on your side. Now in power, they will have the chance to improve the lives of those who voted for them, will they?

Funny I couldn't figure how they lost the previous elections. Hamas has strong domestic policies, aiding those in need. With the billions the world gives(I think the majority from the US. :D) to the Palestinian Nation's People, magicly disappearing under the former government, maybe Hamas can bring about positive changes.

So what they don't recognize Israel, you'll be surprised how many countries don't. Just that news only covers the neighboring counties that hate Israel. I wish Palestine and it's new leadership good luck. They have a long road ahead to get their country's domestic issues fixed.

    later,

    tom

P.S. Funny how the news fails to mention Palestine is already a democracy when they talk about IRAQ being the first one. ;)

Very apt, I think, Henny. Nothing guts an extra-governmental, radical group like achieving the aim of power.

So many examples. Red Brigade in Italy, c. 1970's. If they had ever come to power, were they ever to have gathered Catholic centrist support, built a coalition and had to do things like, I don't know, fund school milk programs - the sheen of the street would no longer hold and that would have been that.

If Israel wants Hamas to go away: maybe the best thing Israel could do, to end Hamas, would be to squarely deal with it at the negotiating table.

    Nice point, Henny.

They were democratically elected. So theoretically they should be legitimately in power...

Of course Hitler got democratically elected too...

Somewhat related, a case in point to my point above: The history of the Socialists in Germany, from Bismarck through the Weimar republic, is a sad one of a party and class in disarray, coopted by the most antithetical source possible - Bismarck and his Junker base, fortified by the coalition of Iron and Rye. Bismarck provided the very things that the socialists and others promised - universal suffrage, social security, unification. The socialists were left with the scraps, and became part and parcel of the very system they declared themselves to be outside of. By WWI, and into Weimar - they were left mouthing platitudes and became irrelevant.

They stood on these platitudes - principles which forbad them from going to bed with the Communists, and Hitler, who along with everything else, to our great misfortune, was a pragmatist and skilled coalition builder. He eagerly went to bed with the communists and swept aside the democratic socialists even as he swept himself up the ladder of electoral politics.

He stayed in power as a revolutionary, by thoroughly sweeping aside centuries of strictures and traditions. Things like military advancement, social structure, all of it - his was a young movement, and he was undeniably a revolutionary. His ideology of hate was accompanied by a zeal for destruction of the existing social order unparalleled in history - he decimated the remaining Junker class; like Napoleon before him, he brought revolution in power and the rest is history.

Were he to have accommodated his policies to the status quo in social and military structure, I would venture, he would have folded back to the streets of Vienna as the slime he was. Sadly, he had some brains and knew how to build, and hold raw power.

I agree, Hitler would not have been elected if the economic/political climate wasnt so extreme.

The extreme situation Germany was in called for extreme measures and leadership.

And I must say, economically Germany recovered miraculously, shame that the freedom of people was slightly destroyed...

Hitler was a revolutionary there, too. While we in the U.S. were idiotically trying to maintain a Hooverian economic model ("gotta balance that budget") even as the country slipped further down the drain, Hitler, whether he meant to or not, grabbed a Keynesian model and said to hell with it - spend and build. Roosevelt followed, but only later.

By the way, DSM - White Horse, SW6 4UL, has the best Bass I've ever had. And mild. And Rooster's Yankee. ;)

Things will continue to deteriorate in the middle east. Most of the people living over there are too blind to see that Hamas was a creation of the Israelis. Like Al Qaeda, Hamas is an organization that has a bunch of connections to the government.

We can just hope that the peace process continues and a solution to this long standing conflict should be sought.
