My ISP must be experiencing technical incompetancy today. I can access a handful of sites, and I can't get to google or yahoo :(

Woe is me. woe is me.

    Hint: spyware scan

And check your hosts file for entries you didn't add - delete any you don't need and then write-protect the file so it can't be altered again. That's a common spyware technique. Among other things, you'll usually find you can't get to AV and anti-malware sites because the hosts file redirects you back to your own computer so your browser gives you a "page not found" or DNS error.

This one time, my ISP went down for like 5 minutes and I sprinted to the internet cafe, but it was closed. I felt like i'd been punched in the stomach, so I ran to the local hospital where they have a free internet section for the patients and I kicked all the old, sick, weak hospitalized idiots off and finally took my place..on the seat...infront of the computer..reunited with beloved DP.

God, that was a fucking day full of panic.

One time, My internet was down and I had to deliver a project to one of my clients. I disconnected the internet connection the next day and even started my own page to file complaints against that ISP. ( btw, I was already fed up with the provider - its called SIFY in india and they suck )

    LOL :D

Whenever I loose my connection for more than a few minutes, I scan for WiFi networks right from my desk, find one of gazillion unprotected hooked Wifi Routers and logon to internet bliss. Most people just hook up their Wifi routers and don't even change the defualt password, not to mention encrypting the connection.. PPAAA

I have also switched to MTNL broadband and its pretty smooth. no problems till now. Btw, tech86, which plan have you got. I got the nights unlimited one but I guess I will be switching to the total unlimited one. Any idea if they are capping their upload speed on that like sify does ?

I can't find anything wrong with my PC, but I can connect from my laptop just fine :(

my pc has aim, icq, skype and yahooIM but no msn, port 21 or port 80. I can even SSH from it...

I've been needing an excuse to do a fresh install for about a year now. I just wish I could have done it on my own time. I'm just kicking myself because I downloaded some image someone linked me to on aim I didn't know the other day. That has to be it...

Hope it is the half I never visit...LOL

My isp is the local phone company, two blocks from here.
I call, they take care of me at once...even apologize to me if the repairman can not get to me inside of an hour!

After screwing with yahoo im, and a few others, yet again...I deleted the whole mess again.

Uh-oh. That sounds very like the virus two of my sons managed to acquire a while back from an MSN transmitted file. On one of those computers, I spent two days trying to get rid of the damn thing before I gave up, wiped the drive, and reinstalled everything.

If you do have that virus or a similar one, all I can tell you is it spread itself into a lot of nooks and crannys on the drive and I could not find a way to eradicate it. I'd get it so it looked like it was gone and then when I rebooted it was back. I don't know of it's one of those root-kit things or just something that infected one of the core OS files but my advice is save yourself a lot of work and just reformat.

Aye, I'm reformatting now. It looks like I got it on two of my machines... I'm not sure how or why this one wasn't effected and I'm too afraid to turn on any others. Hopefully I'll be back to normal this evening though.

This type of thing is something you just have to throw your hands up and say 'wtf' with a smile on your face. I haven't had a problem like this in what seems like a couple years, so at least I had a good run ;)

It just dawned on me that right before this crap started happening I got a BSOD, which never happens.

This feature has saved my butt a few times.
    System restore.

Tomorrow, try to see what I can do with the son-in-law's computer.
He told me he can not even boot now.
I should have fun for a bit before I say the heck with.

I disable system restore. I keep all my important stuff on a remote RAID10 array, so if push comes to shove I just pop in an image and I'm up and running in a half hour.

Unfortunately I lost the image for these two PC's ;)

I spent all day debating on what to do... what to do....

So right before I hit L to delete my Windows partition I decided to boot back in to Windows and try something I hadn't thought of. As a short side-track; have you ever noticed how the more you learn about technology - the more you're foiled by things a complete novice would have thought to do? I owned a small boutique PC shop for 3 years, where in the beginning it was just me building them. I can program in several different languages. You would think I could figure out something simple right?

Alright, so back on track. I started Windows, viewed my connections and did the setup network wizard. I'll be damned if it was any simpler.

So the lesson for the day, is don't think everything is as complicated as you think you can understand. Try the easy stuff first ;)

I get to put off that well-needed fresh install after all.

Last night (or early this morning, since it was 1am at the time) I was uploading a new script to a site, when boom! Everything went blank for internet.
Tried and tried, could not connect.
Then it hit me....my isp was on it's monthly program of doing whatever it is they do when they shut down for a bit.

So later today, still have the script to upload.
