A client contacted me to help strengthen her Wordpress website. Apparently it was "hacked by Indonesian freedom" or something like that. Anyway, I got the site back online and it appears whoever hacked it added a text widget on the sidebar with their Adsense code in it. First of all, what kind of an idiot would add their coveted Adsense code onto an uncontrolled website. Seems like a fast track to getting banned. Second, will this help me track down whoever hacked the site? Or should I just delete the widget and forgot trying to trace them? Thanks!
First thing I'd do is click the ads a lot (incognito), so they they get invalid activity on their account. Then I'd remove it. Then I'd see if there was a way to track down the owner. Look at their adsense code for this bit: data-ad-client="ca-pub-01234567890123456" and then google it, see if you find it elsewhere.
Nobody who values their Adsense account would. However, a hacker might add the Adsense of another webmaster in hopes that you would complain to Google and maybe get their account terminated.
