Legal? Far from it! First of all, the hacking itself is a Federal offense, called "Compromising the Confidentiality of a Computer" which has 1 or 5 year sentence, and in a situation like this, where the goal is to get money, you would further be charged with "Accessing a Computer to Defraud & Obtain Value" which is 5-10 years. On top of that, if you tried to sell the database back to DigitalPoint company or Shawn, you'd be looking at extortion charges. "Extortion Involving Threats to Damage Computer" carries another 5 to 10 year federal prison sentence.

Sites located in the US (such as DP) have 3 places to report the crime to: the FBI, the Secret Service, and Internet Crime Complaint Center.

In addition, even if you're overseas, there are several treaties the US has signed with most major nations. I'm too lazy to dig them up.

The lesson is that "hacking" (which is the wrong term really) and stealing someone's database is A) immature B) dangerous, and C) especially stupid when it's a company like DP which has a ton of money in order to find and persecute you.

Check out http://www.cybercrime.gov/ccmanual/01ccma.html for more information.

Oh, and if you were to do it, and were traced back to this thread (IP logs, etc) you'd have a conspiracy charge on top of that. :D So many aggravating factors, you'd be toast unless you had an A-list attorney and a ton of money. Which you don't, because if you did, the thought of stealing a forum database wouldn't even cross your mind.

no, he will drive through your house in his hummer....

actually, Shawn is the owner of the forum, so he can take legal action against you. If you want to stay a member of this forum, I suggest that you quit talking about trying to hack DP...Shawn has more resources than your hacking skills can conquer...

Now who would want to abuse a site like this??? Besides, true hackers keep themselves contained and leave as little of a trace as possible...

Theres no conspiracy in this thread.
    I havent seen any agreement.

Damn, I had another point to make but forgotten. Ill edit later.

O yeah thats it. It was a site 'backup', was this a backup made from where? It sounds like it was hacked, merely just downloaded.

Hacking is never legal.. what would give you the right to earn money stealing something somebody spent a lot of energy and time on? That's like somebody coming along stealing your business and reselling it.. it makes no sense + you can get into legal trouble on the internet and I'm pretty sure you will if you decide to do something like this..
