H1 tags still important for SEO?

    Hi,

would you guys still recommend using keywords in the H1 tag of a relevant page or is this practise now considered to be a bit "spammy"?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Undoubtedly as important as ever. I base my comment on recent experience. A client had no h1 tags, I included them and used a few keywords in them and the increase in ranking was remarkable. If anyone suggests not to include h1 tags, I'd question their judgement

Apologies for the necessity in editing this post...when I mentioned h1 tags, I did not mean to imply the use of more than 1 h1 tag! Use just 1 per page!

Remember to not use more then one <h1> per page. You can use multiple <h2>, <h3>, etc...

Yup totally agree, using H1 tags and the lower forms is still important.

Maybe it is not quite as important to google as it once was but it still counts and everything you can do helps.

As for the prehistoric SE's like MSN they absolutely love h1, h2 etc, prob something to do with them being where google was 5 years ago

That said i love msn, easier to rank and their traffic converts way better than any other especially in the niches I am in

Agree with the above - use 1 h1 per page then h2 etc. I find they work.

With regards MSN I agree it seems to like "on site" stuff for SEO.

Of course it has SEO relevance.
It helps spiders with the structure and theme of your page, and sorting through its relevance.
I'm speaking from personal experience that H1 tags are still very useful.

My opinion in this is that as long as search engines gives importance of the contents, H1 tags and all other tags such as H2 and so on will help your website..

But Googles webmaster rules also say dont buy links - I don't think many sites that rank high haven't bought links at some stage! ;-)
