h1 tags - overused?

what are your thoughts on the use of h1 tags? Can they be overused?

We set up a templated site for a client and put an h1 tag (with varying text) at the top of each page.

The client has now edited the content of the pages and in the process has added h1, h2 tags in his content.

This now means that the pages will have 2 h1 tags, one at the top with the keywords we recommended and another part way down the page where they have edited the text.

    Is this a bad thing?

H1 of your keyword has always been a basic SEO 101. If you use a good CSS, then as far as looks goes, it shouldn't be a problem; you can make it visably any font size you like. I've read that you want to only do it once though so it seem spammy to search engines.

I agree, once is enough. It is kind of like a title for page and if you think about it from an information architecture point of view, as SEs are supposed to do there should be only one.

Whether it will hurt or not is another story.

Don't you love setting up and optimising pages for clients only to have them come along and edit everything?

An H1 is used for specfying the heading of the page, if a page has content that is divided into different headings then h1 can be used twice also. But generally h1 is used to specify the most important heading and sub heading can then be provided in h2, h3 etc.

However one must keep in mind that an h1 must not be used after an h2, ie. the order should be maintained on the page.

There's no concrete rule on this. We know that heading Tags, such as H1, H2, H3, etc. can add additional weight to certain words. Those attempting to abuse this positive ranking factor will find that they can't simply cram as many keywords as they can into these tags, even if the tags themselves grow to be no lengthier than usual. Keyword Stuffing penalties appear to be possible simply as a function of the total space within these tags. As a general rule, if you want a concrete answer of whether or not an SEO penalty exists, try pushing a positive ranking factor well beyond what seems sane.

I would recommend sticking to the rule of placing just one H1 per page.

H1 represents the main heading of the page.

    Think about it yourself.

Can a single article have two titles?

    No, right?

It just doesn't make any sense.

A while back I read that if you use more than one H1 tags, Search Engines will only value the keywords in the first H1 tag.

That means, Search Engines will only consider the first H1 tag and will ignore the rest.

If your client is using H1 tags just for the sake of increasing the font size, then you should instead use CSS for the purpose.

Let me know if you have any questions. :)

Usually we use only one H1 tag per page. Better to stick with one h1 tag.

H1 tag is very important to use your main keywords, and it will help to rank your main keywords in the top position of SERP. Mostly avoid more than 1 h1 tags. Instead of you can use the h2 tags.
