    Heading tags are indeed important in SEO. So, what you have heard is true ;)

    To style them with css you need to work it out like
    h1 { rules here }
    h2 { rules here } etc..

    Heading tags are used to identify the sections of page content in a Web page, which is why the search engines treat them so well. Used properly, the search engines will be able to properly associate the headings with their related content.

    Here's an example of what I mean. Pick up a newspaper (any newspaper). The newspaper's title (Chicago Sun-Times for instance) would not be a heading, but instead would be a graphic (yes, an image). Each article (which would have its own Web page on their Web site, but let's keep this to print for now - if you prefer the Web version that's fine too) would have its title as a H1 heading. The main points of the article would be the H2 headings, with each sub-section of those main points being H3s and so on. Notice that the H1 gets used once per article (as the article title) while the H2 through H6 get used at least twice (as siblings, meaning they're nested). For example, H1, H2, H3, H3, H2 would be semantically correct, while H1, H2, H3, H2, H4 would not be.

    This is called semantics.

    I wouldn't use headings for that, honestly. I prefer to use headings for the page content (the text people come to read - in this case your blog entries) rather than non-content section headers. I'd go with a DIV container, with a <b></b> element (rather than <strong></strong>) inside it, followed by an unordered list. Something like this:

    <div id="categories">
        <b>Categories</b>
        <ul>
            <li><a href="#">Category Link</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">Category Link</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">Category Link</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">Category Link</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">Category Link</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">Category Link</a></li>
        </ul>
    </div>

    Code (markup):
    From there, style it to taste, but reference everything from the #categories ID.

    #categories b {
        background: #0C0;
        color: #FC0;
        font: bold 1.25em/1.4em tahoma, verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
        text-decoration: underline;
    }

    Code (markup):
    (Obviously the above is just an example.)

    I'd have to see your entire page to be able to tell you how to code it properly.

    just another way for a bot to understand what is the theme of your site, it is common fact that you will generally add the central theme as you heading, its common sense, SEO is not rocket science
