Can anyone please tell me whether if its a good diea to enable GZIP ?
Will it place additional load on the server with html/forum websites ?

For example i have noticed that GZIP is enabled on DP

It does put extra pressure on the server for anything that is php, however html js css and anything that isn't isn't affected and it does cut down bandwidth bills.

more than likely, mod_gunzip exists for apache but near on no one has it installed, most people prefer to, and do use the php compression modules
