Gumtree - Craiglist's alternative. Do you use it?

Gumtree seems to be one of the sites that have gained popularity over the last couple of years.
How many people use it as they use craiglist?
I see alot of promotions and such on there with generally a large amount of views after a couple of weeks.
I will be using it later on when i need alternative and all else is failing.

Have you experimented with it yourself? Marketing uses?

Gumtree is more popular in Europe. If you want to advertise something there, it will be good idea.

Gumtree has its good points and it's bad points. For offering web design services it's perfect but it's also difficult because I'm in the US and they aren't. Basically finding clients is good there but actually work with them isn't as easy as I wish it was. :(

GumTree is huge here in Australia, and over in Europe as well. It's one of the first places people go to sell unwanted stuff, or look for certain items and services.

I've used it a lot to look for rooms to rent and stuff like that. However never as a marketing tool, but I would definitely say it has some potential. Would be interested in seeing how you get on with this. Post some stats up if you want, like how many views on your ad, site and conversions etc etc.

I looked at gumtree in the uk with the thought of offering wordpress services, however there is a lot of competition on there and people are spamming the back out of it. A lot of people use it for selling cars and renting out property. There probably is a way to cash in on the traffic from it, if you have a good niche.

I've heard that it's good, but I've never used it. Can't be worse than Craigslist tho, CL is so picky and so strict about what you can post! :)

I checked it out but what I was wondering while checking is if they really only target the UK as even craigslist has somt parts for the rest of Europe

Yea, Gumtree is not that popular in the US. But can find great leads in there.

Thanks for the great responses guys (and gals)! Some guy recently posted a thread on the WF claiming he was making $1500/week with gumtree (and he lived in Thailand), but he was spamming and all his accounts were shut down. I just wonder if there are any lucrative white hat methods you can use it for (besides offering services).

Yeah, that's been my experience. People swear by it. I might give it a whirl, though I think I'll look into their paid advertising, I'm not into spamming.

Simply another company of eBay, But it's all free to advertise which is a bonus as eBay fees are insane!. It's still growing but in the next 6-12months it will grow massively!.

Gumtree is huge here in Australia. I have used it to sell a car, but the main way I use it is to advertise, dogs that I help rescue (saved from the Kill list in the local pounds). I always can find good homes for these dogs, plus other members of my group do the same with the same result.

Friends have used to to buy and sell bikes, and other such goods.

To me this indicates that people search Gumtree to find things they are looking for.

What I am not sure of though is how good it is for business purposes. It does have a PR6, so I guess even if you have a ad running continuously, you could get a good backlink.

    Hope that helps.

I've only used it to advertise the spare room for rent with good results here in Australia.

Sadly it's been bought out by EBay, as it was previously their main rival here !

I'm kind of on the fence about gumtree. i think it's probably better for selling physical goods rather than internet marketing products and i've found most of the advertisements to be nothing more than rubbish scams. So i don't really recommend you try to make a living out of it.
