I'm quite new to web design, and i was wondering if they was a guide on the basics, not the actual coding which i use w3schools for, but what each language is used for and such.

Why would i use say php instead of html? what is the advantages and disadvantages of them all and that sort of thing.

    thanks in advance.

To break it down in a easy way. You still have to use HTML with PHP, but PHP makes your site more dynamic. With PHP you can make a change on your entire site by editing one file. If your site is only like 10 pages then basic HTML is fine, but if your site is going to have hundreds of pages use PHP.
