Hello, I have a Vb forum. Its growing at a very fast rate and most of the time there are about 150+ members online. It has around 10k members and 2 lac posts. I am using a shared server but the server provider has sent me the following message : I am a noob at server managment and dont have much knowledge about it Can any one please suggest me what should i do ??? Should i go for a VPS or dedicated one ??? I pay currently $20 per month for the hosting and cannot afford much for the server! Can any one suggest a suitable & cheap VPS or Dedicated server which can support my growing forum. Is there any way i can cut down the overusage of the resources on my server ?? Waiting for your help !!
Hi, Without any detailed resource usage statistics I can only guess at what you actually need for resources. In my experience you will probably be better off moving to a dedicated server as a vps is will probably not have enough resources for your site. Unfortunately, with a dedicated server without management your looking between $80 on the extremely cheap and not really recommend side to $130/m to the medium/decent side. Since you don't know much about server management you will probably need to also spend $30-50/m for a server management package. You might be able to get away with hiring an admin on an hourly basis to do the initial setup and then hire them on a case by case basis. (Usually around $25-75/h) Seeing as this is way over your budget I would suggest that you think of ways to have your forum generate income if only just to cover hosting costs. Common methods are: Subscriptions - Give users extra features or access if they pay (Better, consistent income) Donations Ads Selling Links.
VPS is very bad than shared hosting coz u get low CPU power per VPS as if site is running on pentium 4 Best is to take dedicated penitum 4 server comes around 70$ http://webhostsplanet.com/index.php
