If you are really looking for your forum to do well, do not opt for free webhost. At some stage your traffic would grow and server performance would be a major irritant for your forum users - thus my humble suggestion is to go for a paid hosting - which is more reliable.

Next step would be to go through ReadMe that comes with the installation package, it gives you information on where to copy what files and how to set up the software.

    Cheers

Most of those host do not allow you to install your own forum software. Most of the time they want you to use phpbb or the free version of invision power board. There are many reasons for this, such as ease of upgrading the software and security. From my experience, most of those free host do not allow you to upload files to the server.

I have looked into free hosting, but never used them. Mainly because I was not able to install modifications, or upload files to the server.

There may be a free hosting provider out there that will allow you to upload files to the server. But I do not know of one. Its too much of a security risk for free hosting providers to allow people to upload files to their server. People would be uploading denial of service scripts, and no way to track the person down. It is a very large liability for the hosting company to let just anyone to get a free account, then upload and execute files.

And one more thing, if you bought a license for VBulletin, why are you trying to get off so cheap? Just just spent almost $180 for an owned version of VBulletin, or $100 for the leased version. But you do not want to lease a server? Something sounds fishy there.

If you have high speed internet, set up your own server. Download something like ubuntu linux, install it and you will have your very own free server. From what you describe, that might be the best thing for you to do.

I don't believe you paid more than $180 for vBulletin and want to use free hosting.

Check the Web Hosting Section for more hosts.

1mbps is not that high speed anymore btw, I think a T3 would be best ;)

Also, peter_anderson, maybe he used up his funds, so he wants to start up small.

Depending on what you are doing, 1 mbps is plenty. Unless you get into streaming audio or video.

Take a look at the Ubuntu forums here - http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php

    Other flavors of linux include:

    Debian
    Fedora
    Mandriva
    Gentoo
    Slackware
    Suse

Fedora core is another popular version of linux. http://fedoraproject.org/ The fedora forums - http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/

If you want to set up your own server, head on over to the server administration section here on digital point and ask a few questions.
