Have you tried a plugin to block spammy comments or manual moderation? What platform are you using, WordPress or something else?
I have also ran a blog in the past and know how annoying and negative spam comments can be for ones blog. I'd be glad if I can help with something :)

Guest blogging has definitely changed over the years and it is now less effective for those of us who did it right, so thank you, spammers.

In the olden days, it was really kind of cool to even have a blog in the first place - and most of us who had blogs way back when were more than thrilled to publish our own content.

Then we realized we could help each other out, and blogging entered the beautiful era of connecting real people with similar interests.

Then, as with anything on the internet, marketers realized they could abuse it for their own ends (don't get me wrong: Yes, I've guested simply to have a link) and once that realization was out it became a venue for spam - and now we're at the stage we're at now. IMs partied in the house until it was condemned and then they burned it to the ground. However, using that analogy, it's still possible to invite someone over for 'dinner', you just can't expect to have a 'wild party'.

Guest posting still works - but the only blogs worth guesting on, if you're only after a link, require time and work to be published on - as it should be. A link form the bio on ProBlogger will still have juice, but good luck spammers trying to get an article published on there.

Nah, I have to approve the comments so I just mark them as spam. It's just very annoying and yes and I am using WP.

In this case you might be better off putting an extra "wall" so the spam comments aren't submitted in the first place, something like a Captcha or a checkbox that a real user has to select to show that they are not a spambot. At the very least you can use a plugin to mass delete the spam comments like WP Delete Pending Comments. There are actually many plugins in WordPress that can do such a thing.

I do have an article bookmarked a while ago that may be of help:

    :)

I probably will when my blog starts picking up, but for now it's not too popyular. So I get these scam comments only couple times a week.

that is because every prick that sells so called "seo services" has to send your link
some place; You can-not sell seo without stuffing links any and every place you can get them in....
"We can rank u this, we can rank u that" in order to do that, they have to spam the planet...
but in the end the buyers will pay a heavy price and wonder why google has given them the pink slip....

Yea, people don't realize that it's quality over quantity. It's better to get a couple high quality links rather than 100 crappy ones.
