The only reason (that I'm aware of) that AdSense is not spiderable is because it uses JavaScript (well, robots.txt exclusion of course too). And the only reason I can think of that it uses JavaScript is because it's easy to setup.

Every major website that displays ads (text-based ads or not) and has any sort of technical know-how embeds the ads in the HTML source (this includes Google, Yahoo and MSN for AdWords/Overture, etc. in their search results).

Why? Because it can't be disabled on the client-side by software or the user disabling JavaScript. In fact, if you look here, here and here, they are threads just in this forum about people asking why they can't see AdSense ads here. And you know only a small fraction of people who can't see them would bother to make a thread about it, right?

So it seems that every major company (Google included) agrees that ads within the HTML source is the best way to do it. You get 100% impression percentage and it can't be disabled. The drawback (in the case of the ad network) is it requires more support since it takes a little more technical knowledge to do.

If Google adsense displayed advertisers sites in the same way the Coop links do then these site would likely improve their rankings like lots of coop members are currently experiencing. Therefore the question is did they design adsense using Javascript to make it easy to setup or to prevent having to account for them in ranking algorithms? In the same was as preventing the problem rather that treating it.

Nah, google runs their links through google, they aren't direct links to the site.

Right... their system keeps track of click-throughs (they have to because that's how they get paid).

    Exactly.

Members who depend exclusively on the co-op are asking for trouble. You have to be promoting at least a dozen of your pages equally using all thinkable means, and doing link exchanges and submission to directories.. maybe even a bit of link purchasing. In conjunction to all of this, if you have massive co-op weight which you distribute evenly amongst your pages, your rankings will only go up. My domain is now showing 500,000 backlinks in Yahoo, and besides a slight drop yesterday in 3-4 key phrases my rankings in Google are still holding strong.
