For me, its the PPC (Pay-Per-Click) model. The system is an awesome concept. See Google makes the most money off the internet?

    Google - Hoover - Coke -

their brand name has become the generic term for not only their product, but other similar products by other people.

Marketing doesn't get better than that.

The greatest marketing strategy, IMO, is offering stuff FREE. Why? Because people don't like being sold to.

Trial offers (the 30 day hold) is proven to be one of the greatest.

    I will agree with gley.

Yahoo got started giving away free email accounts.

AOL became America's number one internet service provider by snail
mailing free online hours all over the country. First on 3.5 diskette,
    later on CDs.

I think the best marketing strategy is that nowadays everyone has the possibility in the internet to make money online nearly without investing one cent.

So only time is needed and you can't really loose anything.

The instruments for this are numerous: Article Marketing, Bum Marketing, Social Networks etc. etc.

    Nearly endless possibilities... :)

Yahoo is in trouble and AOL is a ghost of a company past, bad examples.

The free method sounds great until you write the check yourself, noble idea at times but not always applicable or realistic.

Correct that people don't want to be sold to.

Marketing can, plus other factors, help develop a brand that people remember and seek.

In any sales environment, your goal is to have them decide They WANT or NEED it from You.

People seek Value to match a Need or Desire. Price is not value but can be related.

Top 10 Most Powerful Brands according to Millward Brown, a unit of mega ad agency WPP:

    6. IBM

    8. McDonald's
    9. Nokia

    Viral marketing...

The idea of having a free product floating around the internet racking you thousands of dollars on auto-pilot just seems like the coolest marketing idea ever...

In my opinion the best marketing strategy is to help other people growing their business. Thus you build reliability - making people know you and trust you, and people who look upon your business as honest and reliable will accept your offers. This is of course a long term strategy.
The best short term strategy is Google Adwords, in my opinion. :)

I think the creation of Blogging is the best marketing of all time for me, but actually the ability to use CMS (content managment system) on a web site really empowerd and lead to higher rankings because the content was not needing to go over to the HTML guys and content was added and added on topic and became our goldmine.

So CMS and blog following made marketing a better way for the little guys like us. This is the best marketing capible stratigy empowerment.
