Greatest Cause of Atheism In The World Today?

Listening to DC Talk, "What if I stumble, What if I fall", and the opening line is:

"the greatest single cause of atheism in the world today
Is christians who acknowledge jesus with their lips
Then walk out the door and deny him by their lifestyle.
That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable."

    Full Lyrics: http://preview.tinyurl.com/233uv9

To me that means we acknowledge Jesus with our lips, then go around hating instead of trying to understand and empathize with those who are hurting and show them love.

I would like to hear opinions from all different Religions/Non-Religions... just people. :)

    THanks!

Solution, my lack of belief in deity doesn't come from seeing followers that fall short of a Christian ideal, nor does it come from seeing a world abandoned by a seemingly unfeeling deity. It comes from my own investigation into nature.

But I respect your view, and believe this is indeed Christ's admirable message. As an atheist, or agnostic, or whatever I am called, I believe Christ's message of agape to be central to his example.

I had this conversation with a coworker yesterday, the greatest detriment to religion are those who justify their actions through god, in essence they work against theirselves.

Anyone see the Dr. Phil house of judgement with the girl who would condemn anyone and everyone to hell but at the same time would curse off camera? People have to be able to look past that and take religion for what it is.

You are absolutely correct. There is too much hate in the world, too much confusion, so much pain.

People just don't live up to the morals given in their Holy books.

People perceive Jesus Christ or Prophet Muhammad or Gautam Buddha to be ideal men to be followed, yet their teachings are mere words to most.

I would have to say , the people are what originally turned me off

I was sent to Sunday school etc when little and the people where just so full of shit that it really just made me not want to participate at all

I was pretty young when I realized that religion was bullshit, I still sort of believed in god etc, I mean its hard not too when you are told something when you are young. As I got a bit older I realized that most likely the god and jesus stuff is BS too. I guess there is chance its true, but hey there is chance any religion you want is true.

and what is it? a way to control and tax people using guilt and the fear of death?

Religion just seems like a big hustle to me

i think the biggest cause for the increase in atheism is the general increase in IQ

the more clever you are the more far fetched all this religion stuff really seems.
people wouldnt even think of making up a story with so many holes in it these days.

I can see your point if you've been turned off by the mainstream catholics, or the ones who have grown to judge others. That truly sickens me, as a Christian myself.

Pointaiki that's a respectable view imo. Some people become athiests because they've built a wall of hate to other religions, but others actually have their own good reasons why not to.

I'm not 100% sure what I believe but I know the "Christianity" that many see today is really a contradiction. Everyone wants to pass judgment on others to make up for the "sins they don't commit".

And catholicism has corrupted any chance Christianity has in helping the world. The blind followers are just as "evil" as the athiests. Everybody sins, and it doesn't matter who you are, nobody is "pure". So they can that crap now and just get it outta the way.

I think real Christianity is understanding that God is Love and once they've understood that, then they can practice it in their lives. Maybe before passing judgment on others..

Well, I am not an atheist but I have been agnostic in the past for a long time, and it was a series of things, all religions have something in them that at its base seems totally contrived and fantastical, something that requires a blind faith.
And then there was my life in the Southern Baptist Church of Hypocrites. Perhaps not all churches are like the one I grew up in, but the things I saw and heard there definitely crippled my beliefs for a while. For me to maintain my belief in deity in the light of all the pain and hurt in the world (why does god let kittens die etc.) I had to come to a series of understandings for myself that work for me.
Religion should be personal, people need to stop beating on my door trying to get me to join their cult. I know where they are if I ever decide thats where I want to be.
So growing up with hypocrites, a general dislike for things that don't make any sense to me, and being annoyed with proselytizing would probably be the reasons I am not a follower of any of the big three. Oh and Jesus didn't write a book, if I had access to the guys own opinions instead of the views of everyone else who claimed to know him I might find it easier to discern whether it was valid for me or not.

I'd say the biggest cause of atheism is knowledge.

If you look at the statistics you'll see that the more educated any group is the higher the % of atheists you'll find in that group.

I would like to note that I am not an atheist myself but I certainly respect them and find that they are often very intelligent/logical/interesting people.

    Ok, this is pretty interesting.

Seem to be multiple reasons, and probably shouldn't have phrased it "Cause of Atheism". Doubt I would appriciate a thread titled the same way but replacing it with Christianity.

I wonder, to the ones who believe in Atheism due to education, would you be open to further knowledge that might sway your opinion, or have you pretty much come to a solid decision like I have with Christianity?

I'm not getting ready to start preaching to you, I'm just wondering because, if someone came up to me and said "let me teach you why Atheism is correct.", I would say "No thanks, I've already looked into it.".

Is that basically the same for you?

Anyone who claims to be christian and who doesn't go to church is automatically considered not to be a true christian and i would bet that at least 60-70% of the USA who claim to be true christians are actually talking out of there asses and don't even follow the book, they think they are going to heaven because they speak of believing in god. no sorry based on your book you gotta go to church and live the life the bible wants you to. i guess 60% of the so called christians are really just bullcrap.

I believe that spiritualism is a personal affair. If it motivates you to live what you feel is a more moral life, and set an example for others, it is positive. If it inspires you to compassion and charity, it is positive.

But if it is based around doctrine or group think, it can easily be corrupted.

Whatever you believe in, has to pass the test of conscience before it can pass the test of faith.

Where in the Bible are you getting that you have to go to Church? Church wasn't even invented until after Christianity came about.

Yeah killafawk lol, there is no mandatory statement in the bible stating you have to go to church to be a Christian.

If this is the "knowledge" some of you speak of then you already proved yourself wrong. Sure, it seems to be a trend that the more knowledgeable are athiests, but you should know that a lot of the "elite intelligent" people lack common sense.

When you get in an argument with an athiest you will dive into the issue of "why were we created and how were we created if there is no god?".

Their argument is that energy always existed and that there is no true purpose in life. That's basically all i needed to hear, that's usually why people reject the fact that there is a god. They don't believe there's a purpose in life. That's fine with me, if that's what they believe then it's not my business to change how they think.

if a Christian is someone who has been baptized into the church and professed the faith of the church, then you have to go to church to be considered a real christian.
