Type into Google what keyword you're running for and put a link on your site to all the sites in the first/second page of the results, then email these sites asking for a link exchange explaining you have done the same (Supply them with the link so they can view it themselves). Most sites will link back to your site as it does good for both parties, then you'll have high PR sites in your category pointing back to you. Write articles and submit them to as many different article directories as possible, with a link back to your site in the author bio, then place them on Blogger.com or wordpress.com (Both high PR sites) and point them to your articles and back to your site. Write one original article a day if you can and they will spread virally. Remember when writing the article make sure you fill it with quality content as they will be picked up by webmasters for use in their newsletters.
Social marketing sites such as StumbleUpon drive hundreds of instant visitors but they are not targeted and bouce rate is always pretty high. Social bookmarks like Digg and Propeller can bring traffic quickly as well
Also check with squidoo/hubpages that let you build a page on a topic and help in promotion, you can also use them for syndication of your content adding your feed there.
I have several new blogs. Some of the things I did was submit some of my posts to various carnivals, use stumbleupon, use blogging zoom and look for people to exchange links with. One other thing I did was tell people about it offline. Believe it or not, it actually worked. Good luck!
Don't forget to think about long term growth. Like a human, quick growth often hurts (site can go down, weaknesses exploited at large)
