Google recently filed a US patent which reveals a great deal of how they rank your web site. Some of it you could never have guessed at...

You have to keep in mind that you can really pin Google down to one algorithm, because they are constantly changing, and have one of the largest data stores in the world in which to process data. Also, as we have learned, a new ingredient called trustrank may be coming soon.

the patent was filed almost a year and half ago. It offers some insights, but no way close to what Google's current algo. There've been extensve discussion about the patent on the web. not sure it'd been discussed here at DP.

one interesting point was that Google could actually use the patent to mislead its competitors.

Owning a patent does not mean that it is in use. People currently working on their ranking system I'm sure are covered under very strict disclosure agreements.

Sometimes patents are just out there to prevent people from doing things, or to cover your ideas even if you did not implement them.

That has indeed been discussed at length here at DigitalPoint as well as in most other major SE forums.

It may tell us some things about what's possible but not what is.

Having to register your domain for 2 years sounds like bollocks to me. What kind of spam assumption is that? Ridiculous!

Wouldn't apply to .co.uk domains anyway as they have to be registered for two years and cannot be registered for any longer.

As far as .com's go it has been pointed out on this forum before but I seriously doubt there would be much/any algo weight based on it.

They patent alot of these sort of things but most of them never come to fruition anyway.

Shouldn't this be filed under "forum promotion"? Or perhaps "bad forum promotion"?

Your forum has 4 members. Your "news" is old news and not even accurately reported or original. I don't think this strategy is going to increase your numbers much, danephillips.

Why is it you try to share something that maybe important
and some people become weird, and fail to just see the post as interesting maybe useful.

I think your brain is stuck on only one word spam.......

The internet has become full of people who actions are as unreal as the www. is to real life.In the net some people
are so quick to judge everything, like one may judge a book by it's cover..........

Wow, talk about taking time to think about what you are going to say...

One would think with 3 months to muster a response it would be better than that. :(

They left out the best thing to do to rank in Google. Get yourself a Google Idol and spend time each day praying to it. You will see improvements in your rankings. ;)

My domain/hosting company actually suggests purchasing the domain for 5-10 years. I just thought they were trying make more money.

It is very interesting, as GoDaddy.com also pushes multi year registration...google's patent does say they prefer to see domains registered for multiple years, so that one isn't just for cash...although that is why they try to sell it...

Not exactly. There is a suggestion or implication that this could become a factor, not that it is a factor. As had been said repeatedly, this is such an easy factor to fudge, it's really, really hard for me to believe it will ever be given any weight.
