Not sure about a secret but yes I agree it is a very good way to receive backlinks for the graphically talented. Just wish I was artistic. :)

That's a good idea. Link baiting is a growing area, it's sometimes cheaper for you to pay people to develop things like this for your site as it continuously builds backlinks over a long period of time.

you can also design a skin yourself and then get those links for free... though it is hard work to get a kewl skin which will easily propagate.

Yeah, I don't think many people have the skill to make something look good enough for lots of people to use on their sites.

Actually I find this not such a good idea.
The templates are used by people putting content on their website with your link (side wide). You have absolutly no control over the content.

    Example:
The well known web directory script biz-directory.org, has had about 214,000 backlinks (still has check yahoo), with no control over the content. At first the pages of biz-directory were up to a pr6. A well respected directory script website, after a certain period of time the pagerank dropped and pages where not indexed anymore what resulted in a complete ban of the website about 6/8 months ago. The owner created a new website for the script now.

What the problem was that lots of people started building porn/gambling web directories with links to the script website. Some of these websites were stated as bad neighbourhood and all links are side-wide. Two features google doens't really like.

I find a very good idea to create a custom skin and share this with other webmasters, but imo not for link building.

Did he link back? I can't see that happening with a one way link only.

I'm building a CMS, but its not going to be free, but I hope to get back links from that (I'll be selling two versions, one with "Produced by <link to my website>" and one without for a bit more money) ^^;; Thanks for the idea!

No he didn't link back. But on every page of those bad neigherhood websites was a link to the directory script website. Check for instance this search or this . I wouldn't want to have my link on those pages. That makes me related to those website. Not a good thing imo.
