Every day I see poorly constructed, low content web sites join our ad network. These sites are largely pages of ads with a little bit of content, often scraped from elsewhere.

The problem with these type of sites is that they deliver zero value to advertisers. All they do is clutter the web, like spam. This is why Google recently introduced Panda amongst other tweaks to the search engine to penalize copied or poorly constructed content.

If you want to make real money from your web site, you really need to look at your site and ask yourself the question: Does this site provide value to the surfer, does this site contain original and well edited content that will decease my bounce rate and keep people on the website ?

Too many people throw up sites which have no purpose other than showing ads. This may be an effective strategy if you have the resources to generate thousands of sites, however if you run a handful of sites this strategy will fail you.

It is no secret that web sites with well written, original content, that provide value to users is going to reap you more rewards when it comes to placing ads on the site.

I know of one person, who has a highly original blog, with only 3 ad spots on the entire site. He writes every day and has highly interesting, relevant posts which keep his reader base coming back every day. He earns approximately $3,500 per month from Google ads alone. Sometimes he does a review and authoritatively links to the product he is reviewing, thus gaining affiliate commissions from sales of the products he reviews.

His earning are no accident, they are the reward for building a user base and having highly original content which is well edited and interesting to readers. People link to his blog from other sites, people tweet about his posts and sometimes add links to his posts on Facebook. He does ZERO marketing of his site, relying only on word of mouth from his readership.

I see too many sites which have been created for no other reason than to display ads. If you have a site like this then you will mostly fail, they do not work, there are people with many more resources than you spamming the search engines with mostly unoriginal, scraped content. As the demand from users puts more pressure on Google to keep tweaking it's search engine, these types of sites will drop from SERPs like rocks.

When I talk about original content, I am not talking about rewritten content, I am talking about original ideas, original concepts, written for the purpose of providing information or pleasing a reader base. Content should come first and foremost, ads last.

Advertising is how you monetize quality content. As time goes on more and more ad networks will start weeding out the crap and only providing ad space to sites that actually benefit advertisers.

If you want a long lasting relationship with your ad network and you want to earn the maximum possible for your efforts, then put your content first. It will reward you to do this much better than taking shortcuts.
