People should not be good and ethical out of fear, they should be good and ethical because being good is the better choice and better for humanity as a whole.

Just get a new paper or watch news on TV. Why land yourself in trouble ?

Yeah, to be honest, I'd be very curious to see if this stands muster, even in Texas. One thing to waste two burglars in a home invasion, another to waste them when they are running away.

Although, to be honest, reading another source, the old guy may have justifiably believed he was in mortal danger:

If this is true, and it can reasonably be argued the guy believed a lethal attack was imminent, he had every right to kill them.

But I'm getting conflicting things - one story that he willingly went outside with his gun to engage these guys, another that the guys came into his yard and he employed his gun in a rightful use of force.

Anyone have any sources that seem authoritative in actually saying what happened?

I think you see the point, however. Wasting people over "stuff" without any reasonable belief that one's life is in jeopardy leads to, well, you get it.

If you support the gay marriage ruling in California, then you have to accept the laws in Texas as well.

No one disputes that what those two robbers were doing was wrong. The old man called the police, and that too was the right thing to do. However, here is the problem. The police told him not to go into the house and yet he did. He even said that he had a gun.

Then, the two robbers didn't attack the man, they were running away. He shot them in the back.

Basically the old man defied the police who were on their way and shot two people running away from him, thereby using unnecessary force.

In my opinion, what he did was legally wrong. I understand the frustration of people at these robbers too, but it was not up to the old man to take the law into his own hands. By releasing him, the court has set a precedent. What is stopping others from getting their guns out and killing people who break the law?

I think this is the best part of the law! Crime will defitely go down with this law in place.

I'm sorry, but this is insanity. Lots of ways for "crime to go down." For hints on how, ask Heinrich Himmler, or Lavrentiy Beria.

No not really. We are talking about a guy who premeditated murder. There is a transcript of his phone call to 911 when he was safely inside his home telling the dispatcher that he was going to kill them. What else do you want? Here you go:

You see he already made up his mind that he was going to kill these two. Period! It's that simple.

So now you think this is a race issue? I don't think so.

He was found innocent in a Texas court of law. That's Texas. If you guys don't like it, just tell your neighbors, "Hey man, I saw some guys over here stealing all your stuff. Sucks to be you. I called the cops. They should be here soon."

Actually, going on nothing but gut impression, honestly, but if the situation were reversed, and an old black guy had murdered two white guys like this, I see far worse than "he'd get off" for it. I do not discount the possibility he might very well get lynched, in all honesty, circumstances permitting.

Yeah, that's about right. It's called "civilization." And if you don't like that, perhaps you could find a way to return to an era when we had really, really overarched brows, wore leopard skins, and carried big clubs.

People keep saying "this is texas". Who cares? Laws are laws. The old man didn't react and shoot those burglars, he planned and shot them. He even said that he was going to kill them. They didn't attack him, they were running away, he shot them in the back. It doesn't matter what his neighbor thinks of him. This is not a popularity contest.

And No, i don't think it was a race issue. It was a case of vigilante justice. That is against the law, no matter what state you're in.

No, I am getting nasty because your posts spring from zero logic and what I believe to be a deeply flawed worldview.

"Logic," for example, would follow up the platitude "YEAH, but crime is down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" with "but at what cost?"

Logic would say that if today it's two "sub-humans" - "illegals," in your apparent world - running away, what if tomorrow it's two kids in halloween costumes, taking a short cut through your neighbor's yard? The cops say "thank you - and we got it," only to see you put in the turkey load magnums, and get the thrill ride of your life, playing cops? And so forth.

But I am getting nasty, and it is out of line, so I apologize. That said, it is my opinion your posts are riddled with nonsense.

Well, it looks like it's not against the law in Texas, so your point is moot.
