Just by the question alone I am leading you to answer either or. Our schools (my opinion) are the reason we have limited intellectual boundaries.

This woman gives a very clear goal of our modern school systems.

What is your opinion on our system? Would you home school? Private School?

    What has been your experience?

If I have the money when my wife and I have kids....we will send our kids to private schools....to many public schools have teachers that are either lazy or that have an agenda...

    Terrible.

I believe it's intent was good, but it's systematically been centralized and thus has retarded in value.

Our country would be wildly different if we had a more competitive schooling industry ie our public schools were like our colleges. I welcome that change, as it will ultimately determine our place in the world economy.

I also believe it will help us return to a Constitutional government. I generally believe that the neo-cons and new liberals will fade away once this happens.

We have pretty good school systems where I live. Relatively small community. Cost of living is low, chances of living are high. I wished I had the money back when my kids were young to send them to private school. I feel they received a good education, but am sure they would have received a better education in a private school where there is more discipline and structure.

In my country. public schools are very overcrowded so If I can afford it, its best to send my children to private schools

I'm not familiar with vouchers other than the oil vouchers saddam gave to our allies to buy them off.

Not sure about educational ones though.

Depends on where we live. Where we are now the public schools are excellent.

True...I'm not sure many Chinese immigrants complain. Atleast the ones I've met.

Their parents often ride their kid to get a good education. I could sort of understand that, since if your dumb in China,...you'll (likely) be doing hard labor most of your life.

Although they say things are changing in China. They suggest poverty will be quite low by 2050....who know!?

I grew in a small community on the beach in a nice area. No crime.etc and so on. My elementary school was excellent. I went to the public school for college..and while that included a few other towns...it was still very good if you wanted it to be. All towns on the beach. No crime in any except for the occasion dui.

In an urban setting...i would only guess they are hell on earth.

Agree w. everybody about one of those Choate, Moses Brown etc...I went to a bigtime school and 70% of my classmates were from snobby prep schools. I was severely behind my classmates for about a year-if not more.

Most of the kids are such spoiled pricks from the uber pricey schools. IMHO. But its a great education

I think the education system in the US should be more similar to the Chinese education system in some ways. The fundamental Chinese education is flawed but without that flaw our schools could do much better. Their fundamental flaw is teaching children to listen and memorize instead of listen and understand (generally proven through using the material instead of by tests which look for info such as dates..). Oh and you can bribe the teachers.. lol but bribing is rather commonplace in China.

Anyhow other then the fatal flaw in Chinese education they have some things right. The public school system is tiered from pre-school. Those that perform better are sent to better schools at the edge of each tier. Pre-school, primary school, junior middle school, and high school. One thing interesting about the education system here is that all the schools require payment.. also the better school you go to the cheaper it is. Which means those low income families are still urging their kids to get a better education. Afterall it saves them money! Another interesting difference is that the students who do well in school (good grades etc.) receive marks on their uniforms (yeah they all have uniforms). Basic students who aren't very good get nothing, good students get 1 stripe, the best student in a class (students stay with one homeroom teacher through high school) gets 2 stripes. The best student in a grade gets 3 stripes. The students with stripes tend to lead activities etc. and creates more competition within the school.

Anyhow there are plenty of problems with the Chinese school system: mostly not enough schools to teach Chinese people (thats a lot of schools!!!) but I think they have some things right.

    --------------------

On the topic of the question I'd say send your kids to a private school if you have a good selection of private schools in the area which offer a rich selection of classes. The public highschool i went to had fantastic staff including great business classes, and pretty damn good computer courses.. so i enjoyed it and learned a great deal, I'd look at the schools in your area and decide based on that.

I wonder if School uniforms would make a difference? Did your school have uniform code? We had are kids in Uniform schools and it seemed like less problems because of that rule.

Nope, my school didnt have any uniforms.. we were the rich school in our city though. My school was the one that tended to either win or be a competitor in everything from music to sports to robot fights (which I won).
