Where did the traffic come from? (search engines, new referring link, a promotion, etc.)

That is abnormal. The traffic improves only just except when you make new postings and search engines give you a higher posting.

A few months ago, I had a similar things happen only to discover that a hacker has added a porn folder to my site and was using my respectable website as a porn server to the planet.

You should check your access logs, this sounds like a badguy spambot/site scraper or comment spammer

Not really - increased referral traffic, mail shot, offline coverage, PR etc etc

Find out where the traffic is from (traffic sources > all traffic sources).

Could well be a massive hit from social bookmarking (digg etc). Not sure if it could be the spam option as suggested above as a javascript snippet has to be executed for Google Analytics and if a new folder had just been added it would only show in server logs - but worth keeping an eye on server logs anyway.

I don't think is from digg or other social bookmarking because the number of hits 930 is small for a big social site. The op is banned so he can't answer us.

Not sure - I had a couple of personal sites operating over xmas and they picked up just numbers in that region in one day from digg.
Obviously - there could be any number of different reasons for this, but as you say searchia is banned so we'll probably never know!!

Referral numbers from social bookmakring sites can vary enormously. I recently was listen on delicious/popular and got about 700 visitors, while the spanish equivalent of digg: meneame.com brought me about 13.000 in a day.

before that I was getting about 40 visitors a day, now after a week of getting picked up on blogs and twitter I get about 2000+ a day. Has been a great week, wander how long it will remain this way. hope natural search will take over a little.

A second boost from Spain sent me 20.000 visitors daily for two days. Traffic has cooled down no. Still getting about 500 or 600 visits. Has been a cool week. Here's the stats for proof!

What did you do the day before the trafic increase? Did you post any articles, videos, did you do any social bookmarking, or any other type of promotion?

That traffic must have came from somewhere. :D

There are some many variables to why this has happened. I would check out your incoming links on your analytics to find actual sources of traffic from that day. This way you can get educated and try to recreate the high flow of traffic.
