PR is made up of links, so if websites are linking to a site, whether it be dead, flash, frames whatever, it will have PR
I think PR does not really effect the traffic. My PR5 actually dropped to PR4 but i got increase in traffic with more content I've added last month.
That's because PR does not reflect your content directly. Pagerank is a product of the *amount* and *quality* of inbound links. Having more backlinks does not automatically mean you have higher PR, even if you compare to pages in the 'same industry'. You're not the only one that is confused, this thread if packed with wild speculation and confusion about what PR is Some other things to clear up: -PR does influence SERPS, but it's noly one of *many* factors that come into play. That's why it's common to see a page with lower PR rank higher in the SERPs than a document with higher PR. -Higher PR on a page does not automatically mean more traffic, but it often turns out that way, due to the indirect connection mentioned above.
IMO, PR surely helps in improved rankings. What is your site niche? Have you tried optimizing the pages for some popular, high traffic keywords? Do some research on Wordtracker or Overture and find some highly searched key terms related to your niche. Use them on your site. You'll surely see improved rankings for those keywords and an increase in traffic. Also get a few links using those keywords/phrases if you can.
God some people are unbelievable. PR indirectly affects SERP's because it is a correlation to how many backlinks you actually have. The more backlinks you have, the higher you rank. This is basic SEO. SO, if PR is based on backlinks, and SERP's are based on backlinks, guess what? PR is a good estimate on how you are doing for SERP's every 3 to 6 months. That's all PR is, nothing else. It won't tell you how much traffic you are getting or how successful a site is. It's usually just based on backlinks, okay good? got it? great
Read the google webmaster guidelines. It tells your there that PR effects ranking. PR is only one of many things that affect your ranking in google. Just because you go to pr 5 does not mean you are going to rank well. It may well be your are in the sandbox.
PR for me means that the higher the PR, the more frequent crawling by Googlebot will be. I expect a PR5 to be crawled more frequently than a PR1.
The pr you see in the google toolbar isn't only a few months late, it's also a rounded number, which means that an increase from 4 to 5 is really just the increase from 4.45 (which rounds off to 4) to 4.51 or something (which rounds off to 5. The basic thing here is that you're doing well: your pr just got a bit better. Traffic is, like everyone has been saying, more important though - traffic will bring you more links, will bring you (perhaps) a higher pr in the future. Also: You probably have a few more links from sites you don't own than you realize. Did you check yahoo-site-explorer?
PR is irrelevant to crawl speed, it's how often it's updated to how often it's crawled. PR does kinda effect rankings as, you all have been saying is related to links and links area very important part of the algo, but you don't need high PR to have high rankings, yes it helps (and makes it alot easier at times) but you can still obtain good rankings with no PR. I agree that PR does help rankings, but it is not the end all of SEO
