Provide it? Do they not allow you to host forums?

That would seem odd. Because Forums are just like any other software. Of course it would depend on if you have access to certain requirements like mysql databases, and specific versions of php running by your host etc.

I would use phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/). I'm pretty sure your host don't mind you installing forums script if you're paying them for hosting your website.

Thanks for the advice. I will contact my host to see exactly what i am able to use. I basically thought i would just have to get a forum upand running like V bulletin or phpbb and link it to my site..

I am very very new to all this. have been using forums for years. took for granted how much work goes into them to be honest..

I will let you know how i get on in due course.

    thanks again

    Hi

If you have Cpanel and your host has enabled Fantastico, you can install phpbb with one click.

Ok so i have decided to go with phpbb3.

It was pretty easy to set up has plenty of skins to choose from and basically offers exactly what I need for now.

Thanks to all for the advice

I would say that phpBB has pretty much gone downhill for the past few years. Try using SMF instead for free software, if you're looking for software still.

Paid? Hands down, vBulletin is the way to go.

Don't use Fantastico because phpBB.com will not support you, since it is not an official build. I would download it directly from phpBB.com and be safe, any of the MODs can be downloaded from phpBB.com anyway.

I use phpBB, ever since v2 phpBB has received some pretty bad security reviews. phpBB3 has been around for a number of years and no security vulnerability has been found. It is also a lot more user-friendly than SMF and vBulletin.

if you have the budget you can use vbulletin, if you dont have money however you can use phpbb or simplemachines forums which is mostly available in most webhosting.

VB's the best at this time, Phpbband IPB are more down to preferences. I prefer IPB because its capable of adding in alot great mods like you can with VB. Quite a few newer one's you can try like SMF, or mybb that are pretty good.
