Got a few newbie questions!

    1. If i were to pick up PHP and MySql, would that make the process of website creation, development and maintenance faster/easier than with C# / SQL?
    2. If i start with a free web hosting provider and then switch to a paid one on a different company, will i lose my traffic / google rankings?
    3. Could you recommend some affordable or free web hosting companies that will allow me to try some stuff and host my first web site?
    Edited for clarity.

    1. If I were you I'd go with php/MySql simply because you will be able to get more support if you happen to run into questions/problems later on.

    2. You may, you may not. If, let's say, you switch and your new provider is having more down time (unbeknown to you) your rankings will most def. go down. There are many variables that are at play there.

    Thanks for the answers.
I have a somewhat good base of C# and SQL and I was wondering if starting to learn a new language from scratch is a good idea because i really need to get my projects started, what do you think?

If you know all the ins and outs of C# and how to connect from C# to MySql, then hostgator will probably be your best bet. They offer a decent support.

That is awesome, tbh i am not that good with C#, I'm wondering if learning php would make my life easier even if it takes a couple of weeks to get some stuff done.

Php is way easier than C#, and it has a stronger community for support. Development costs are also relatively lower. And i doubt you will find a free hosting on a windows server.

Learning your second programming language is always easier than learning your first because you know what to expect. The same goes with databases. I was looking at MySql stored procedures recently and they looked identical to oracle back when I worked on those systems.

You will find PHP easier simply because you understand some of the fundamental programming ideas.

Before you dive in, though, look at what you want to use your new PHP skills for. Are you wanting to be proficient so you can get a job or do you have a specific project in mind? You may be able to kick start the project by finding the right CMS or framework and then use your fledgling PHP skills to modify it to your exact requirements.

Well you have a point, I'm picking up php, I have a couple of small projects in mind that wouldn't require much work or editing, in the near future i would like to build some android mobile websites.
Could you recommend a free hosting for my first couple of projects and to try some stuff?

I haven't dabbled with free hosting in years. I have a reseller account that costs me next to nothing and I can have as many domains on it as I want. I used to use handsfreehosting and they were good. I'm consolidated now on one NZ host but you'll find lots of companies doing reselller accounts which give way more flexibility than buying 1 domain packages.

I will be using the free hosting to test stuff mostly, do you know any cheap hosting with limited support? I was considering hostgator as qwikad suggested but it costs $8 a month and i think its a bit too much for a newb like me.

$8 is nothing - 2 coffees in NZ, 3 newspapers. I wouldn't quibble over that.
