Got a better domain for my blog - what to do?

I've got a blog I've been working on for a few months now and it is going well, but have recently bought a very good domain name on the same subject - a much better name than the current one is using.

So now I am wondering what to do. I'm thinking...

1 - Start up a new blog on the new domain and "compete" with myself
2 - Point the new domain to the old one and phase out the old one

I'm leaning more towards option #1, as I don't want to mess up my search engine rankings. I wonder if there is a way to do this without sacrificing all of my links, search engine rankings, etc.

    Any thoughts are appreciated... :D

I do not know much about SEO, but I think you can 301 redirect your old domain and old pages to the new domain and new page locations, without search engines loosing your rankings or your backlinks.

Thanks for your feedback, I'm going to look into this 301 thingy... but am still tempted to do a competing blog with myself to see what happens. Could be an interesting experiment. :D

I'm not sure, but I've heard it somewhere that Google doesn't URLs that goes back to the same website. Anyway, it is ok I think for just one extra.

danielbruzual & cianuro is both right. 301 can 'preserve' your PR.
