The Washington Post just wrote an article describing Google's most popular products based on its subdomain hits. I think this is a very interesting metric in defining the popularity of its products. (and can be for other websites too). From the article: "Can you name Google's top ten products? If you look at how Quantcast ranks Google's subdomains, you can get a sense of which Google products are the most popular, since they each have their own subdomain. Google's main search engine tops the list with an estimated 136.6 million unique visitors in the U.S. Then comes Google Maps (36 million), Image Search (31.7 million), and Gmail (10.5 million). Google Docs, Sites, and Knol are still too small to make the top-ten, but are all showing decent growth. " I would have never pegged image search to be the third most visited. I guess I should start optimizing my images more. Happy New year all!
i don't either. unless goggle says what they are there is no way of knowing. does quantcast have access to googles servers? 5.9% go to books.google.com??? i don't think so. i think alexa is more right http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/google.com mail and images in the top two and maps and books at 0.5%.
This data is localized to Us only, right? I guess the picture changes when the global audience is taken into account...
I agree, I tend to trust the Alexa stats more than Quantcast. Quantcast has not even updated its system to take into account and record stats from new TLD's such as .ME. So I do not know how serious they are about accuracy. I wonder if the books, maps, images.. etc, stats have become skewed somehow because Google are now adding these into some of there normal web results? Still... interesting all the same. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers James.
Localized data..thats why its kind of weird for me..as far as image.google is concerned I have no doubt that it is very widely used..
That's not surprising, pretty much any navigational these days implement Google Maps on way or another.. even top GPS System use it, lol and even the iPhone
I guess many US drivers/citizens don't have good sense of direction . The google map helps them a lot for free .
Google Maps and Images used to show up in the normal SERP's once you do a lot of popular searches, which in my opinion might be the reason for such a decent increase after all
I'm not surprised Google images is heavily used, also as regards Google maps it is very useful. I use it as a route planner regularly here in the UK
I was surprised at where images was ranked actually. Given what Matt Cutts said about how many people do not know about its functionality (the exact number escapes me), I am surprised it made it as high as it did.
In our business - Google Maps is way ahead. Daily multiple use by a small enterprise of no more than 200 people. No way indicative of the larger crowd of technically savvy people, but if you want a representation of the idiotsville crowd - then we are not a bad sample.
Would be nice if we could tell which images were being searched the most. If I had to guess I would say #1 is adult related pics # 2 maybe celebs, and the rest I'm not sure. I use it to find premium stock photos w/out the watermarks. Seems most people don't change the names before they upload them to their sites/servers.
That's the one that surprises me if it's accurate in any way, i've built sites over the 2 Million visitors a month mark. So if i build 75 of those sites, i'd have more traffic than Google.com homepage? Somehow i don't think so. Edit: Ok so it's 136 mil a day after looking at the graphs, that's more like it.
