I finally got PR back on some of my domains which had been penalised, so I'm happy.

I'm going to take it slow with the link building this time, don't want it to happen again.

By the way, i can sell some of such domains - with backlinks like PR5, PR6 etc. I think it is easier to buy a domain with backlinks (good old backlinks) than registrate new and buy additional links.

My website has high quality, unique content and for at least a couple years, it has remained at a PR5. With the May Day Google update, I was shocked to find that it has dropped to PR3!

Has my site been penalised for selling text links? I heard that search results would be affected if there's a penalty. But so far my site still comes up on the first page for the usual keywords it ranks for.

    Also,
    - Adsense is still functioning
    - The number of backlinks is largely unchanged as before.

I used a couple of Google Penalty Checker Tools and both claim there is no penalty in place. Does anyone know what's going on and what I can do to check if there's indeed a penalty? Thanks!

Do you sell text links? If not then there's no chance of being penalized for it.
But TBH, even if you were selling links that pass PR and Google new about it, then you would more likely have a "toolbar PR" of N/A or 0. (remember that the toolbar PR is not the real PR of each page)
It may just be a glitch in the toolbar, or maybe Google recalculated and came up with a new TB PR for you (old links deleted, nofollowed or discounted, links from sites that no longer exist etc etc)... but if you are selling links, then it may fall again.

    You heard wrong.
PR does influence how a site ranks in the SERPs, but "Toolbar PR" has no influence in the SERPs at all. In saying that, TB PR is there to give you a rough idea of how your sites "real" PR is doing, this also tempts link buyers and sellers to engage in buying and selling links that pass the real PR. To combat this, if Google think a site is engaging in link selling, they will often take away the temptation (from buyers) by removing the sites TB PR. (what buyer would pay for a link from a PR-0 site?)
This should not affect the real PR of the site 'unless' the sites owner is also engaging in spam and/or other spamming tactics that go against the Google webmaster guidelines.

    Hope that helps.
    Cheers
    James

Thank you for your response. Looking at the Google Webmaster Tools, I have close to 9000 backlinks, and 45000 when I do a link:domain.com on Yahoo. This is roughly the same as before. In this case, is it likely that backlink changes/devaluation are the reason why my PageRank has dropped by 2 points? I don't have a good understanding of this, but it seems that if a handful of backlinks are devalued/removed, the thousands of links remaining should still keep my PageRank at 5? Thank you.

There's plenty of good advice in the threads on this forum on how to achieve high page rank. But basically you need to make sure your text, headings, and meta details are perfect for your search terms, and get lots of high quality links to yur site without giving away links yourself.

And be sure to look at the structure of the sites that are at the the top of the rankings for your search terms and you will learn how top rankings are achieved.

Those things plus quality links equals high PR. Not tomorrow, but eventually.

What a load of nonsense!. PR has nothing to do with the text, the headings, meta details. PR is totally based on the links.

One thing I love about Digital Point is that its the place I want my competitors to come and learn their SEO from people like you.

I will type this next bit really slow:
You have confused PR (PageRank) with the ranking of a page. PR/PageRank is that green bar we get in the toolbar. It 100% based on links (go and check the defn on Google's site or the Wikipedia page, if you don't believe me). This whole thread is about that. The poster above was asking how to get PR4 -- only links will get them and that nothing else will.
The ranking of a page is based on >200 things. PR is one of them. The text, the title, the meta tage are some others.

Your really need to stop posting misinformation .... but then again, I hope my competitors continuing coming here to learn thir SEO as it will make my job easier.

Easy. You can have a zillion backlinks and still be PR zero!! Read the wikipedia link I gave above. PR is based on the quantity and the PR of the links pointing at a page and the number of the links that are on the page that the link is coming from etc. Go read the Wikipedia link - the formula is there and explains it all.
