Google updates their algorithm daily. If you are just talking about "major" updates, I think we will see a minor revision to finish off "Jagger" within a month (major updates usually are followed by a minor update 4-6 weeks afterwards once things settle down). As far as major algorithm changes (ones that get a name), they usually happen every 7-9 months.

    7-9 months?

It does not say that they will be no PR updates, right?
And beside the PR, I see my stats are changing daily. Theoreticly, Can I get to #1 when I am only on 150-position even without the MAJOR update?

Definitely. You can jump anywhere in the ranking no matter if there is an update or not. This obviously depends of if you have increased the number of links using the keywords in your anchor text and how competitive the keywords are.

If your site has already been through sandbox, you can get to the top of Google with a couple of quality backlinks as well as some basic SEO tricks.

Moreover, backlinks from .edu sites will most probably help your site getting a top ranking overtime.

You gotta be more specific on what you mean by a "Google update". :) Google results fluctuate daily. Major algorithm changes are every 7-9 months, (public) PageRank updates are about every 3 months, (public) back link updates are roughly every 4-6 weeks, etc...

Either way, a site can go from #1000 to #1 on any given day regardless of an "update".
