I don't have anything against most Wiki sites, but Wikipedia I do. As someone using Google Search, it gets annoying seeing Wikipedia results at or near the top of the search results. Generally speaking, I know what I am searching for. I don't need a definition or Encyclopedia facts about every search I make. Seriously, take bowling for example. Wikipedia is in position 2. Does Google really think I need a definition of bowling when I search for it? Google should stick with associating Wikipedia with the various search operators, like define:, and bump Wikipedia from the top results.
The problem is that Google seems to be manipulating results for business purposes. Previously, Google had been most concerned with providing the best service. Now, Google is turning into a Microsoft where maintaining business dominance is more important than providing the best service. However, I think that sort of strategy is doomed for failure as Microsoft has been losing on so many fronts in the past 5 or so years. If Google is going to tweak algorithms to punish anything that comes close to affecting their near monopoly, then how good will Google be in a few years? Do we want an internet-based dictator?
will google do something like that? It eventually could harm them more than they will benefit. If wiki approaches court this could be hazardous to Google.
Google ranks wikipedia far too highly in the SERPs at the moment anyway, a drop would be welcome for millions of website owners out there. Usually if you search for virtually any word in google , wiki is always number 1 or number 2 in the SERPs. I dont think this is correct when wikipedia has one page of information on any one subject and they rank this higher than a website full of information on the subject.
