Can anyone explain this phenomena? I've been doing some SEO work for a couple of clients. WHen I search their KWs they appear in the top 5 if I search via a US based proxy. However if I don't use a US proxy they are no where to be found. I am sitting in Melb AUstralia... However Google thinks I am in Perth about 3000km away. I think that issue is because my ip address is owned by a Perth based ISP
Google has geotargetted results based on the end-user's IP address for a long time (years). Not a whole lot to explain other than they do geotarget results on the fly.
I understand that bit - except the results seem to be backward My clients are Melbourne based. When I use the word Melbourne as one of the KWs in the search via google.com.au and use a US proxy they appear in the top 5. Without the proxy they are not in the top 30 but I will have a look via a melbourne based proxy. It could just be because Google thinks I am in Perth I suppose. Thanks mate.
Mmm just tried via a Melb IP addy and the SERP does not have my clients on it. So geotargeting is working against the searcher. 1. My melb clients appear to texans but not melbournians. 2. The other businesses in the SERP are the same for each search. All Melb based. The similarity between these clients is the Google sitemap. Anyone know if that is used for Geotargeting? Thanks
Most of Australia don't understand Melbournians, how do you expect Google to? lol ... jokes. I'm in Sydney, so if you want me to check from here, give me the search term and url on PM, or post it here if you want.
Actually I'm a Brisbanite, living in Sydney for work (www.homeless.org.au)... so double ouch if you count the Brisbane Lions track record... hehehe. PM replied.
mmmm doesn't make sense to me. I tempted to say 'it's the darndest thing' but I won't. If anyone can shed some light on this that wopuld be great. I'm begining to think it is something I have done but I am not sure what.
Just did a few other checks - it went to the same spots via the Melbourne search for one day a week ago. I'm starting to think this has something to do with an update of some description. This happened with both sites. The only similarity with the sites is that they both have google sitemaps. I'm hoping what I am seeing via the US proxy will eventually migrate down here. I'll let you know.
