I believe this opinion comes from looking at the problem from behind the curtain and not in front of it.

If you look at Google from the POV of a guy designing a site, it becomes a hassle for you (really? our sites are always ranked well and we don't do much of anything special except put quality original content...). But if you look at it from the POV of the user, you see why everyone uses google.

#1 - it's integrated into chrome by default.
#2 - the name is easy to remember and ingrained in the public consciousness

When people want to look something up, they "google" it.

If you don't like the way the tool works, you can't just say "I'm going to use others". Because it's not you that's going to use it. It's the billions of people out there that are going to use Google. You can either keep your foot in the ring or take it out. It's not going to change anything except your traffic.

If you are this concerned about SEO, I would presume that you are interested in generating site traffic. So then why would you want to kill all of your traffic by dropping the most common way people find your site?

    Limited POV.

You don't need to use google to have traffic on your site.

I hate google. Instead of googling it I'd rather "bing it" or whatever. It doesn't change the traffic to my network.

Maybe not, but again, that's looking at *your* behavior. Running a site and SEO is about managing the behavior of others. You simply cannot force all the billions of users to use Bing instead of Google.

The technical obstacles to implanting the idea in all website visitors of not using Google as the search engine to find your site before they know your site exists are... non-trivial. Time travel and broad spectrum telepathy are still not 'mature technologies'.

Of course, you are entitled to use whatever you wish as your search engine, but websites will still be designed with Google crawlers in mind for quite some time yet.
