Can somebody please explain how google algorithms effect page rank and searching? Someone mentioned it to me a coupld days ago and I am still uncertain. Thank you!

The google algorithm is the process it uses for every search to establish the relevance of the sites in it's index to that search query, and serve up the most relevant results. As the links Surf Dude posted say, it consists of around 200 factors. PageRank is one of those factors - the value that Google gives a site as a measure of it's importance, largely based on the idea that a link from one site to another is a 'vote' for it's importance.
