Google's 2007-Q3/Q4 PageRank (PR) Update

Why close it? Then if anything does happen, someone will start a new thread... I'd rather have this one PR thread then have to weed through 30 of them when I'm scanning DP's google section...

IMHO... Google PR will be next to Supplement Results... To disappear.. We can't view it. maybe Google will do it internally like supplemental results...

 

They might, but I think rumors of PR disappearing have been heard in the past, and at least so far they have never been true.

I think Google slows down the update, makes the PR have lesser value nowadays.

Google always could have hidden PageRank from everyone. It could have been a complete internal secret. Why have they, instead, put it on display for the masses on the Google toolbar and in Google's copy of DMOZ (Google directory)?

The answer, I think, is that Google discloses parts of their algorithm, and site PageRank, as a way to promote how sensible their algorithms are.

Google wants people to look at PageRank and see that it has a reasonable relationship to the importance of the webpage. They're explicit about using PageRank as one of the main criteria for choosing top search results. So, when people see that Google's PR reasonably well measures the importance of different webpages, they should think that they'll also get a selection of the most important webpages when they search with Google on another topic.

PageRank was part of Google's PR (Public Relations) effort to persuade people that their algorithm was good at distinguishing between important and unimportant websites, thus Google search results (based on pagerank) were of high quality.

I suspect that one of the reasons that we aren't getting a toolbar PR export for a while is that bad things happened to the internal PR. Perhaps Google is implementing some updates to the PR algorithm to defend it better against spammers, blackhats, and link traders. Once they figure out how to fix up PR so that they again have something to brag about, they'll push out a Toolbar PR update.

Before the next PR update we should see an improvement in the quality of Google's first page results. Those have been all over the place in recent months with waves of spam and low quality sites making it to front pages too often.
