At the moment, just typical PR5 and PR0 on various DCs. It has been like that for a while which makes me unsure whether there is really an update.

Hey Mong, why don't you have a "Dig All" button... All 600 in one go? ;)

Anyway i can't see any changes on a number of URL's, so it's back to doing something constructive.

Yes . I have seen big drops then slowly increasing in the past week or so on several sites. I moniter over 100. Some bounced back rather quickly others not so.

I'm seeing some great gains almost daily over the last 10 days on one of my clients sites, I think this is more to do with agressive link building than an algo update though - the rest of the sites don't seem to be going up or down.

No changes in PR, but shifts are something usual for me. Not surprised at all!

What I heard about the change was that it had to do with link sites. Google was not going to count paid links. So big links sites with paid links will suffer because most.

I dont know how google learns about this as to what is paid or not. What I heard mentioned was that is is going to be a competitor vs competitor battle rather than any algorithm change, rat out the other guy ?!

Well one thing they could do to cut down somewhat on paid links is to devalue links found in menu bars, and footers. I wouldnt think it would be too difficult for the spiders to differentiate between menu bars and main content areas.

The types of links that Google wishes to devalue have nothing to do with site placement. The majority of links found in a given site's menu areas are legitimate exchanges, like-minded affiliation, etc. There is no way for Google to have spiders recognize paid links because paid links do not necessarily differentiate themselves from natural links in any way at all.

    That's true.

They don't have to recognize them all 100%... they allow for a large (very large) amount of collateral damage to innocent links.

It's not about improving the serps, it's about getting pissed at people for trying to manipulate them. Google is in mortal fear that if the impression spreads that rankings can be bought, then they will lose their choke hold on the search industry. Like most people who act out of fear, they aren't thinking completely rationally. Screwing up their own algo, or harming otherwise innocent sites, is in fact secondary to eliminating the source of that fear.

sounds similar to the current "war on terrr..":(

...and all you paid link sellers are SERP terrorists.. or is it the buyers?

We're not, but as soon as Google decides to buy California and secede from the rest of the country we'll have to move the thread there. :D
