Some of the biggest portals are starting to sell links. If Google wish to win this war, they have to kill page rank or make it unvisible by webmasters.

As long as you and your buyers don't expect them to pass PageRank, Matt Cutts agrees with you too:

How to report paid links: Update, May 12th, 2007

And for those who are still desperately clinging to the notion that Google cannot detect paid links:

The Post Google Update Disorder Support Group is now open. We are in the process of getting our medical licenses changed from 'Post' to 'Post and PRE'. We never realized there could be an issue with Googbies becoming traumatized by WAITING for a PR update, but it's clear from the threads on webmaster forums across the web that the problem is getting out of control.

Some of the treatments currently being offered include:
Yoga, alcohol, sleeping pills, sex, vacation tie and we're always on the lookout for new innovative ideas to help treat the disorders associated with Google's PR update.

Poems are nice, but if you suspect you may be suffering from a PR update disorder stop into the clinic and we'll run some tests.

Not sure I sense the "desperation" you're referring to, but I do think it would be rather easy for a company with their resources to go through and quickly devalue a large portion of the paid links out there. Even a manual review of fewer than 10,000 suspect sites could be done to verify they charge for links and nullifying their pagerank passing ability if they do sell this PR and boom, done. Might take them a few extra weeks to work out any glitches and have their legal army run through potential legal scenarios, but it seems doable to me.

As a directory owner I'd be perfectly happy with business-as-usual, but as an entrepreneur I think the resulting cyberspace tsunami would present some new opportunities for internet marketers and other web professionals.

I hope we know soon either way!

All this talk of discounting paid links...

Question? :: Is there any proof that Google will penalise sites that have Text Link Ads (text-link-ads.com) on them? If so where?

No. In fact, Google (via Matt Cutts primarily) has made it very clear that you will NOT be penalized, either for buying Text Link Ads or for displaying/publishing Text Link Ads on your site.

Buying advertising links or banners is not something Google discourages at all.

Their only interest is in ensuring that purchased advertising does not have an undue artifical effect on PageRank and Google search results. To do that, they won't penalize the buyer or the seller per se - what they will try to do is detect paid links and nullify or discount any PageRank benefits.

Why do you think Minstrel has gathered up the best psychological resources available on the web, organized them in appropriate directories, and keep them a quick click away in his signature?

I'm concerned about him.... He's spending way too much time here and elsewhere educating the uneducated. ;)

    This has become the never-ending-thread....

Well, at the moment I'm recovering from surgery (leg), with so far a month in hospital and now a month in home recovery. Since I can't drive yet and walking is limited, I don't have a whole lot else I can do.

    I'M BORED!!!

(and maybe a bit grumpy - I've barely been out of the house in two months)
