GooglePages is not likely to win over anyone serious about web design. Kinda like expecting to join a rock band with a plastic guitar and a Mr. Microphone. Certainly impossible to create a commercial website with it. Can't include password protection for areas or folders, etc. Anyone here a beta tester?
I have an account, but just to mess around with and check out what all it had to offer. My girlfriend signed up for an account as well. For me, it's no good for the reason you pointed out. However for my girlfriend who doesn't know web design this provides her a great way to have her own web page. It doesn't take much time to get things going, the user interface was designed really well. It's great for people who don't know web design but want a little site for themselves to share with friends. But for those who are serious about web design, or for people who want to run an online business ... it's not the right solution.
In any case, may I suggest you start signing up 'placeholder' gmail accounts in thwe meantime - That way you will in essense have that page reserved just in case you want it down the line .
A while back I had a suggestion that Google should let people create their Google optimized web pages and then Google could just index those pages and then nobody would violate Googles guidelines and if they did then google would just tell them to change it and everybody would be happy. Google is like Microsoft and I don't like them at all
Google is not like Microsoft. MS did lots of nasty things to potential and actual partners when it suited them to make some dough. Google is just about search and organizing crap and would rather compete, actually it's easier for them since everything web is open and easy to reverse engineer, so they don't get blamed for stealing ideas like Microsoft did. Besdies........is this thread not about Googlepages and whether or not they will be useful to us? edit: btw, I love google and I love thier products. Not ALL, but alot of them are very useful to me. =)
Google benefits from increased web usage outside of closed communities like social networks. GooglePages is a way to get people to create web pages who wouldn't otherwise be making sites, IMO. I think it's kind of like their strategy with blogger, but with more flexibility.
i received my google page few days ago , i can tell you that i spent less than 10 mn and it and i closed the window ! wordpress is better
I just got an invitation for it the other day. I agree with the commercial thing. It works as a personal site, which I am trying to make something out of it right now. Also 100mb of storage space. Does it have the same or similar limits as Gmail?
