Googleguy Condemns Coop?

Discussion in 'Co-op Advertising Network' started by GuyFromChicago, Mar 2, 2005.

I was reading elsewhere and someone stated Googleguy "condemned" the coop network in a forum somewhere...the conversation centered on a "non-profit quit smoking site was penalized for linking to a bad neighbourhood ".

I haven't been able to locate this thread...anyone know where I could find it?

    Thanks for any assistance.

I don't see any reference to the coop at all in that page. Don't feel like reading 100 posts, is there a specific one you can point out?

Where did you read that? That thread doesn't contain the phrase "coop" or "co-op". Sounds like someone putting words in GoogleGuy's mouth to me.

    Nope :D

Thanks for the link to the thread schlottke...helped validate what I thought was someone's interpretation of a comment being presented as fact.

Thanks, I had already read that thread. It wasn't the one I was looking for. The one that mentioned the quit smoking site was the one that had been brought up.

edit- a little positive rep coming your way for the effort :D

Been waiting for Google guy to join a thread for a long time, hope he does soon, it would make my day and we could clear up a lot of stuff that Google has never answered :)

There are more Google guy's on the forum circuit than just Google guy, why does Google guy have to hide?

Why not just come out and tell us he is a public relations guy

I know of some administrators on SitePoint that could be considered Google guys. :D :p ;)

I think the volunteer editors will help to curb the linking to bad neighborhoods a good deal.

Also, if relevancy of links becomes a bigger and bigger issue, a stricter theme designation could easily be implemented on an ad-by-ad basis...even similar to how Dmoz is categorized. It would cut ads down a bit, but would work.

Personally, I think the benefits of the program significantly outweigh the detriments -- will abuse take place? Sure, just like in all linking strategies...but it gets cleaned up. As the program approves, the liklihood of abuse will decrease, and the members will benefit. 'Nuff said.

*Glengara loves to post that thread anywhere someone mentions bad neighborhoods..*

Well it is the most recent indicator of what G might deem a bad neighbourhood ;-)

I found GG's use of the term "aggressive" interesting, particularly as AFAIK those sites were ranking normally, and showing none of the indicators that they were seen as BNs.

I posted that link on the thread on Meso sites, obviously those with a vested interest would dismiss the idea of any connection, others, who are familiar with how "aggressive" some of them are, may be less quick to do so.

I agree with glengara that Google has been more aggressive with bad neighborhood penalties. Which is why people within the co-op are quick to be banned permanently (there are over 100 site bans applied as of right now). Anyone failing to follow the TOS exactly does not get a warning, they are simply gone (along with every other site they are associated with). Better to err on the side of caution in my opinion.

Every single ad going into the rotation is sent to a pending status until it's reviewed by a human. It's *always* been that way.

What about an automated spam or a "site links to bad sites" reporting system so members can report offending co-op members?
