According to the press: Google is to start targeting its internet advertisements according to what people look at on the web, a controversial technique that privacy groups fear will give the search engine group even greater access to personal information. The internet company will monitor the web pages that people visit and the YouTube videos they watch to create a profile of each user. Google are forever crossing the line... they already snoop through Gmail inboxes to deliver targeted ads. Now I hear they're branching out into online storage of medical records with Google Health. Be afraid... Big Brother is watching you.
Google is not doing anything that every other radio, TV, magazine, website and newspaper in the world has been doing for decades. It's called market research. Absolutely false. Yes, but that has nothing to do with invasion of privacy. Get your facts straight, people. Google isn't doing anything that wasn't done to you, your parents and grandparents decades ago.
Google has a very clear (non-legalistic) explanation of the opt-out policy at: http://www.google.com/ads/preferences/html/intl/en/about.html ..plus they have an extensive Privacy Center http://www.google.com/privacy.html
So they rub their crystal ball and it tells them which ads to display when you're using Gmail? It might not be an actual person peering through your emails but it's Google nonetheless.
This may sound ignorant but once these profiles are created, what is done with them? Meaning, will they store & keep this information to themselves? If so, then that sounds a little scary to me. If not, then it may work if it truly adds value to the end user.
