    Hi,

I have all my categories in a sitemap, i have a large number of pages under these categories. Due to url limits its not possible to add these pages to the sitemap. If i prioritise these categories highly will google prioritise the pages under this category the same?

Priority in XML sitemaps is a hint to Google on how to prioritize between URLs in your own site. I don't think you can use it the way you describe.

    However, you could:
    * Don't include the category pages in your XML sitemaps.
    * Use a sitemapper that supports creating larger sitemap files (and/ir sitemap index files)

(I would rather have actual pages/posts then category URLs in XML sitemap)

    • Likely Pages with high priority values get crawled more often.
    • Likely For new websites, help guide crawlers which pages to index first.

Free sitemap generator allows you to generate only 500 pages for your site, if you have a large amount of pages to generate then you will have to pay for this and get unlimited access. After this post it to hosting server then incorporate it with webmaster.

I've been using the Google sitemap and it hasn't helped at all. Not visibly, but probably it's for other reasons...
Theoretically it should help Google crawl, index you pages. It helps them better understand how your site's structure is built up.

I believe they are prioritizing sites using the sitemaps. I think they will crawl them first, because the ones not using them are certainly harder to understand for the Googlebot.

I have no problem with generating the sitemaps, I can do that part no problem. My problem is i have 1000's of pages under various categories and there is about 2000 categories. Entering 2000 seperate xml sitemaps into Webmaster Tools would take forever. So i was hoping just adding 1 sitemap with all categories in order of priority would be good enough?

What do you mean by entering so many sitemaps?
Normally we just upload a single .xml for a single site... Or, did you mean multiple sites?

Whatever priority you are assigning to your webpages in sitemap the same priority will be used by Google when crawling will be done for your website.
