Did anyone notice that in the case of webpages with no titles that get on the SERPs - Google will create a title based on interpreting the body text?

This was just confirmed in a recent post with their User interface Engineer

They also now tweak their algos several times per week according to search quality Engineer

they should just leave it the way the webmaster leaves it, that way the webmasters that do the proper work to do seo will get the benefit, not a site that does nothing to set themselves up properly

Google doesn't exist for webmasters - it exists for the searchers. It's not google's priority to make life easier for webmasters - they want to make searches easier and more relevant to the users so they keep coming back.
Keep that in mind and your SEO will improve exponentially

Thanks for this info. But I think we shall always include a title as it helps a lot to rank well for keywords we are targeting.

Cool. I'll never write a title again :D

Seriously, this tweak could be really useful though...if you let out the title and let google generate it for you, chances are you're gonna rank high for these keywords.
